Enough is enough … but is it really?

I am usually a very optimistic, happy-go-lucky type of girl.  I don’t have an issue, do what is expected of me and get the job done.  Nowadays … I am just tired.

I only have two months left of my BTech Degree, but it feels like two years.  This past weekend I had one of my “down” times.  I try, I really do, but when the clock strikes 04:00 on a Saturday morning and I am still busy with an assignment I get very irritated with the assignment, myself and the lecturers.  I mean, I work full-time as well.  When can I sit down, relax and just breathe?  When can I go out with my friends?  When can I just have my weekends to myself without worrying about an assignment due?  I feel like throwing in the towel and screaming, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH”!!  But then I sit back and think to myself …

Is enough really enough?  I have the opportunity to still study after school.  I have the opportunity to better myself and my education.  I have the opportunity of attending classes in a safe building.  I have lecturers who care and actually attend the classes – no matter how they feel.  I have the opportunity which many do not have.

Enough isn’t enough.  I can do more, be more and strive for more.  Watch out world … here I come!

Have you figured out the second head fake?

Randy Pausch was a Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction and Design at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.  Furthermore he was a son, brother, husband, father and to top it all off a best-selling author.  He received word wide fame for his speech, The Last Lecture.  This was indeed his last, as he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had only three to six months left to live.

During his speech he asked the people in the auditorium, “Did you figure out the head fake”?  He explained that it is not about how one achieves your dreams; the head fake is how you lead your life.  Pausch was a strong believer in karma.  He believed that if you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself.  Your dreams will come to you.

He also asked if the audience figured out the second head fake.  He indicated that this was not a speech for the audience, but for his kids.  This was a very personal matter.  He wanted his kids to know who he was.

I found the recording of this video on YouTube and will definitely be buying the CD.  I feel this man had a wealth of good advice one needs to follow.  This way each of us can figure out our own second head fake.

Why I will never leave SA

I am a young working professional.  Many of my fellow young working professionals dream about working and living overseas, i.e. immigrating.

Personally, I have a problem with this train of thought.  Don’t understand me wrong - there is nothing wrong with experiencing new countries and cultures for a while or gaining overseas working experience, but it’s the immigrating that has me upset.

I agree, South Africa isn’t moonshine and roses
all the time.  We have our
issues, whether it be political, economical, social, etc.  But doesn’t EVERY country have that?  South Africa is a Third World country, but look at what happened in England this past week, a First World country.  Our people strike and burn tires, but the English break, burn and hurt their fellow Englishman.  There is war in the Middle East, starvation in Somalia.  Australia and New Zealand is being hit by earth quake after earthquake.
Greece and France has VERY hectic strikes.
America has the debt issue and is hit by MANY
hurricanes.  And so it goes on …

South Africa, although not perfect, is in my opinion the most beautiful country in the world.  We have mountains, sea, vineyards, the karoo, the farms, the West Coast, the Garden Route, the N1 Highway, the history, the City of Gold, the Mother City, the sunsets, the sunrises, the night-life, the day time and best of all … the people.

Oh, what joy and warmth my country brings to my heart.  I will NEVER desert it, unless I have a VERY legitimate reason.

My point being - South Africans, you know what have; you don’t necessarily know what you will be getting.

How hard is it to follow instructions?

I am one of those people who find it hard to follow instructions.  Is it truly THAT hard?  I gave it a bit of thought …

I was thinking of some scenario’s where instructions are given.

Scenario 1 - I am sitting home in front of the television, cradled in my love’s arms.  It’s nice and warm.  My mom asks me to hang up the washing for her, because she has been running around the WHOLE day.  I roll my eyes, sigh and say okay.  20 minutes later, my mom hangs up the washing herself.  I get worked up because my mom just couldn’t wait, my mom is upset because I don’t help in and around the house.  Here both of our day is spoiled.  If I had just followed the instructions given, we would both be laughing and enjoying our day.

Scenario 2 – I am at work, in a meeting and asked to follow something up.  I agree and a few weeks later I am asked about this.  Red in the face I have to get my way out of the pickle.  If I had just done it when asked, I wouldn’t have this extra stress.

Moral of my story … we receive different instructions, whether it be work, personal, study, or other.  It will be so much easier if we only followed the instruction correctly the first time.  It will save time, money, stress and a whole lot of tears.
